Library

Library repository: preservation

Enjoyment at work creates efficiency at work

A library should be an inspiring environment while at the same time provide a peaceful atmosphere. It should be a pleasant space in which you can move comfortably, knowing that the information you require can be easily found.

Library shelving systems form an important aspect of creating this dynamic. With the correct library shelving system, the optimum solution can be designed for any room, and for any purpose.

Library repository preservation of your historic collections

Library repository containing historic collections require optimum climatic conditions. In many cases the repository will  have built-in conservations systems with pollen filters, to clear the air and protect the room against dust, dirt and mould.

Conditioned rooms

When the building is provided with a perfect preservation system it is preferred to store the collection in open shelving. In this situation exposure guarantees best preservation as the environment is ideal for optimum conservation. See museum – Preservation- optimal conditioning

Prevent emission

Unnecessary emissions could possibly cause damage to the stored objects. In library storage the use of emission free materials is preferred.

  • Steel front covers and doors.
  • Rails in the concrete floor or in emission free aluminium floor aluminium floor.
  • Working and packing tables with smooth or steel tops.
  • Special packing materials and acid free boxes.
  • Galvanized shelving is allowed, but not preferred. Zinc white leaves black stains. Also the surface is not smooth. You risk covers to wear out.

Mobile shelving

If space is limited, mobile storage systems will provide the best use of space. For the storage of historic collections, fragile or humidity-affected objects Bruynzeel’s electronic Compactus® Power3 offers various possibilities that can contribute to their preservation.
These include:

  • Vibration-free movement, thanks to ”soft start and soft stop”, ensures that the collection stays in place during retrieval.
  • “Night Park”. At the end of the day, the mobile racks will automatically space themselves to allow airflow through the system.
  • “Fire Park” which can be linked to the buildings Fire Alarm and/or Fire suppression systems. When an alarm is signalled the storage system can automatically close or open depending on whether you wish to protect it from smoke or open it to allow gas or water suppression.
  • Do you need to stock oversized items at times? With Compactus® Power3 you can store and retrieve them safely. Damage is prevented by an easy adjustment of the mobile stopping distance.
